About

Blue River Apartments has provided quality, affordable housing for senior citizens since 1971 and continues to grow with the Columbia City community. It started with 10 apartments and the board of directors comprised of local residents quickly saw a need for more. Another building with 30 apartments was added in 1978 with the help of a rural development government grant. A third building constructed in 2004 brought the the total to 60 apartments. “We offer independent housing,” said Jennifer O’Connor, just the third manager to oversee the facility in its history. “We help senior citizens in our great community to live on their own as long as possible as they age. In the last several years, Blue River Apartments also began accepting disabled of any age.” Home health aides help some residents, but Blue River isn’t a nursing care facility. A service coordinator on site now helps residents navigate getting home health care if needed, as well as providing financial education and other assistance. O’Connor has years of experience in helping people get rent subsidies so that they can pay what they afford each month. A potential resident fills out an application and after processing, when an apartment opens the next name on the waiting list gets a call to join the safe, welcoming and peaceful apartment community. The apartments are 596 square feet with a full kitchen, bedroom, dining room, and bathroom with a walk-in shower. Independent thermostats are in every apartment. Coin-operated laundry facilities are on site. Interior mailboxes and trash facilities are offered for all residents.
